My objective with this project was to identify an opportunity for innovation in the realm of end of life traditions. The refinement in my approach was to then narrow the scope to an under served population and address their particular concerns. The research that I embarked on lead me to see that the North American funeral industry has many areas that require investigation and further research. In the often unseen world of infant mortality and funerals, there was this undeniable sense that there was little to be done for family who have lost an infant, and the mourning process was to be handled the same way as the loss of an adult. This inspired me to consider how the sociocultural effects of infant loss traditions affect the family and more specifically, the parents of a deceased baby. Would there be a way to mourn and heal outside of the traditional context of cold wooden caskets, and would there be an opportunity to examine the ecological impact of the interment enclosure?
